Can't hear some audio

On the part of Switchboard that lets you test for ringer and voice sounds, I can hear the ringer (after clicking the test button), but no voice (after clicking on the test button for that option).

I tried several times, and even updated JAVA.

I'm using a pair of headphones that have a microphone mouthpiece built in. I've turned the speakers on my desk on and off -- no voice through them either.

I tried with both Firefox and Explorer. System is Vista.

Any ideas on why I can hear the ringer, but not my own voice in the test? Is there a way to fix this? Can I leave voice messages (or will they be blank)?

Hi pip23,

It sounds to me like it is one of two things:

1) The volume of your microphone is turned low or off and therefore no audible sound is being recorded.

2) The microphone is not selected as the default audio input device. Sometimes the line-in can be selected instead and then your mic won't record any sound.

You should be able to adjust the volume and default audio input in the "Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices".

I'm not sure about Vista, but XP has a little sound recorder application in the Programs -> Accessories which lets you record sound and then play it back. This is a good way to figure out if your microphone is working as it should.
