Problem logging in on another computer

Hi there,

I have just registered to try out The Switchboard. Seems like a neat idea.

I registered myself and my wife as users on our home computer (workstation). Windows XP, Athlon 64, etc. Everything seemed to work fine.

To try out the system I started up my laptop computer with IE6 and went to www.switchboard.com, accepted it as a trusted site/applet and tried to log in.

Unfortunately I cannot log in on either user from the laptop!

I can log into both users fine from the workstation.

I have provided the Java console log from the workstation below. Can you please give me a clue as to what the problem is?

Regards,
Malcolm

Hi,

hmmm... that is a bit of a strange version of java you have there. 1.4.2 Classic VM is a bit of a strange moniker for a java installation, i think.

are you using sun java?

another thing that is really strange is this line:

Caused by: java.lang.RuntimeException: Truststore file does not exist: C:\Documents and Settings\Malcolm\.switchboard\keystore

that doesn't make any sense, since the switchboard does not use a keystore on the client computer. one thing to try would be deleting that whole .switchboard directory, and then go to theswitchboard.ca, and see if that clears it up. another thing to try is downloading java 1.5, you'll get better audio performance out of that jvm as well.

Hi,

The Java 1.42 came with the PC (a Lenovo Thinkpad Z60m). It is called IBM Java!

Anyway I installed 1.5 and it left 1.42 on there.

I can now log-in. However, when I initiate a connection it doesn't actually connect to the third party. I did all this from the office - with my wife at home.

The sequence of events was:

Installed Java 1.5.

Tried to initiate a connection to my wife at home. This failed several times. Got my wife to initiate a connection to me. This worked but I experienced echo.

Went to another computer in my office. Installed Java 1.5. Logged in to the switchboard ok. Tried to initiate a connection to my wife. Failed several times again. Again my wife could initiate a connection to me.

Both locations are connected by ADSL with NAT firewalls. They are served by different ISPs.

Any idea what might be causing it?

Regards,
Malcolm

Sorry - regarding the echo - forgot to add that both users were using headsets. Only one user (me) experienced the echo.

hi,

On the tab that has your contacts on it you'll see a checkbox that is labeled "guaranteed call connection mode". Try turning that on. When you are behind a corporate firewall this will often solve the connection problem.

Also tried the same thing on my computer from Starbucks with the same result. That point to two computers having the same problem unless it is something to do with my login?

did you try enabling the guaranteed connection mode?

if so, send me a java console of a failed attempt. there should be something in there.
